The Terres de l’Ebre is a territory surrounding the river Ebre in the southern part of Catalonia in Spain. 35% of the area is protected by Natura 2000 and in 2013, the region was recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Besides the nature protection and preservation, Terres de l’Ebre also works on other sustainability elements to make the tourism development compatible with nature conservation. The agency of Energy in Terres de l’Ebre is working actively to reduce fossil fuels usage and to adopt strategies in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
This destination participated in the 2019 Sustainable Top 100 Destination Awards at ITB Berlin by submitting a sustainable tourism story. Keywords: biosphere reserve, nature conservation
